The Orton-Gillingham Basic Training Course will train individuals in the Orton-Gillingham Approach for the remediation of individuals with Specific Language/Learning Difference - Dyslexia.

This approach can be used effectively in general education, special education, resource, tutoring, and homeschool programs by educators, tutors, and parents who are extensively trained in the approach.


Applicants:
Teachers, Tutors, Special Educators, Parents, Resource Teachers, Homeschoolers, Administrators, and those wanting to learn a specific multisensory approach to teach individuals who have language deficits. A strong command of the English language is essential.

This course is an intensive 100 hours of theory, demonstration, lectures, teaching practices, and a supervised 8 or 9 hour practicum. The sequence of presentation of the knowledge and skills related to the Orton-Gillingham approach are introduced and taught in a cumulative, sequential, spiraling manner.

Course Content:
The Orton-Gillingham Approach - overview, rationale, philosophy, teaching strategies
Specific Language/Learning Difference - Dyslexia - the student and their difficulties with language
Scope, Sequence and Structure of all Language Skills - Phonology, Phonological Awareness;
Reading (decoding, identifying and correcting errors, comprehension);
Spelling (technique, identifying and correcting errors, non-phonetic words);
Syllabication (6 kinds, 5 divisions, teaching techniques);
Penmanship;
Alphabet;
Dictionary;
Basic Composition, Morphology.
Lesson Planning and Plans - Teaching a "Total Language Hour"
Supervised 9 hour practicum - a diagnostic lesson and 8 sequential lessons
95+ Classroom Hours
Creation of Multisensory Teaching Aids



Format:
Fourteen sessions of intensive training in a multisensory phonetic approach to remediating reading, writing and spelling difficulties. The over 95 classroom hours will include lectures, demonstrations, practice of skills learned, lesson planning, making tutoring aids, completion of assignments, tests, and a supervised 8 or 9 hour practicum. Regular homework assignments will be given. Approximately 20 hours of pre-course preparation is required after registration.

A Certificate of Attendance and Completion will be issued when all course criteria have been met.


Instructor:
All courses will be facilitated by an Orton-Gillingham trainer who has met the CATT (O-G) Trainer Certificate Completion Requirements.
