Fall 2017 Update:
Meet the Vancouver Support Group

Blog post written by: Glenn Alexander

Hello fellow OG practitioners and new trainees working toward their certification. My name is Glenn Alexander and I am the coordinator for the Vancouver support group along with help from Nancy Martin. We hold our meetings at Nancy’s at 7:00 p.m. on the last Wednesday of every second month during the September to June academic year. We have a good group of dedicated OG people which I’m sure, offer a cumulative experience of over a hundred years. Yes we have been around for awhile! Our group consists of members working within the public and private school systems and of course independent private tutors. Everyone brings a wealth and variety of experience.

Before our meeting day we request our members to suggest a topic that they might like to discuss. Over the years we have discussed all aspects of the OG lesson plan from penmanship, phonograms, sight words, morphology, ratios, sequences, spelling rules and developing good writing skills, etc. Each member is encouraged to bring a sample lesson that the tutor has used depending on the topic at hand. Those who are building their tutoring business are just encouraged to come to gain knowledge and bathe in the experience that others have to share. More recently in the past few years, we have arranged mini-workshops dealing with deciphering and applying a psych/ed. report to a tutoring program, executive functioning and the issues around getting a student organized, etc. Also we have shared information on how to write invoices, a student report for parents and an introductory letter for parents who are considering hiring OG practitioners. As well we have discussed and shared lessons plans around topics presented at spring fling, member to member or pro-D.

Our Vancouver OG group welcomes new members to our supportive, non-threatening environment where you can learn and share or just be present and enjoy the fun. No man is an island and we need to support each other so we can serve the students who so desperately need our help. There never seems to be an end to the learning process so there is always something new to learn!
